South Gulf Islands Kayaking
Kayaking the southern Gulf Islands covers many different coastlines. Gabriola Island located off the coast of Nanaimo British Columbia, on Vancouver Island to the more southern Gulf Islands like Saltspring, Mayne, Galiano, Saturna Island and Pender Island, all, offer pristine, mild kayaking tour conditions with intermittent challenging sections where the tide currents can reach 4 knots and in the spring some ocean cannel passes reach up to 9 knots.
Plan accordingly as availability of camping areas is limiting at times with some areas lacking variety especially during the peak summer season when, often, the kayaking campsites can be full and busy. In the off seasons the designated beach camping facilities for sea kayaking tours, often less busy and at times non populated leaving you the whole beach at times in peace and total privacy. |

South Gulf Islands – little and big islands clustered together creating ideal bays, inlets and coves for kayakers wishing to explore a vibrant marine eco-system. The calmer channels, safe tidal conditions and large canyon sandstone cliffs serve up ideal conditions for beginner kayakers . There are marine birds patrolling overhead, sea lions barking in the distance and, depending on the kayak tour, whales breaching off the bow of your kayak. It is all part of the experience of touring around the Gulf Islands.

Gulf Island beach camping is a real treat after a full day of kayaking. Just imagine yourself setting up a base camp on a grassy point looking south up at Mt Baker in the distance across the deep blue Pacific Ocean or, how about, hunkering down at a beach for the night under the stars with a chorus of crickets and frogs in the far distance strumming up a tune. 
Kayaking wilderness by day and surrounded by forests, sand and the sound of waves slapping against the sandy shores by night. Kayak the southern Gulf Islands makes for, generally shorter trips, leaving more time for sharing good stories, making new friends over a campfire with the BBQ sizzling up a smoke salmon gourmet dinner.
