Sitting in the middle, on the northern portion of Salt Spring Island, is St. Mary Lake. It is the largest fresh water lake on the island out of the 8 lakes located on Salt Spring. The shoreline of the lake, from all viewpoints, is speckled with individual cottage resorts, some residential homes, farmer fields and areas of green space. On the north end of the lake is a community park and beach access.
The shorelines of St. Mary Lake can be followed most of the time while enjoying a bike ride or scenic drive along one of the main roads on the island like North End Rd and from some of the secondary smaller roads like Lang Rd. During the spring, summer and early fall seasons on St. Mary Lake people gather to enjoy a day of swimming, fishing or boating as long as the boat is non motorized.
The lake draws a good selection of wildlife to observe that would be especially appealing to the avid bird watcher and wilderness photographer. St. Mary Lake has some hiking trails located at the northern tip of
Broadwell Rd that are short and easy to complete.
